Folders is a series of prints that are based on a generative sketch made in processing. The sketch fills a square canvas randomly with human figures. These are drawn with not more than 11 lines and following a set of instructions to keep to keep the human figures well aligned in a grid.
In a vector program the geometric forms between the lines are colored with a limited set of colors in 3 different gradients. Although the coloring could have been done with the generative sketch as well, I prefer doing it manually. A completely generative process has the advantage to produce extremely fast endless variations of possible outcomes. The disadvantage is however that you end up with too many results and an often very difficult selection process afterwards. By coloring it manually it seems that I do the selection more organically while choosing the colors.
Another reason is of course that coloring a predefined line drawing reminds me of those coloring books we all enjoyed when we were younger. Just color and no need to focus on any content.
The name 'Folders' came when somebody said it also reminded her of folded paper. The use of the 3 gradients for each color adds a certain 3D effect to these drawings.
