The small collages of Hans Verhaegen were created, almost daily, between 1990 and 1999. The elements, intuitively chosen, were carefully cut from a Dutch weekly magazine (KNACK).
At first the colour, size, sharpness, the light, the difficulty of cutting out, the structure, the perspective and other formal features of the cut pieces were more important in the selection than any possible meanings or associations.
Later when this endless game seemed to lead to nothing, a desire arose for an atmosphere or a sudden suggestion of meaning or sense. Only then was the collage photographed and encased in one image. The 160 collages all have a number and a title.
Hans Verhaegen later used his collages also completely or partially as a sketch for oil paintings. The collage technique also frequently returned in all kinds of specific exhibitions, posters and installations.
For this exhibition a selection was made from the set of collages 'Van 101 tot 126'. It was also the name of a solo exhibition in 1997 in the 'Voorkamer in Lier (B).
This is the first time that these collages are exhibited in Brussels.
