Paint on paper. Is that a painting or a drawing? And what if you paint on top of silkscreen prints? This is the first in a series of paintings on silkscreen on paper. In the beginning of the nineties I started to paint on whatever kind of paper I found in my studio. It was also challenging not to start with the terrifying white or blank canvas. During the painting process the underlying disappearing silkscreen image was a pleasing source of surprise. When concentration faded, gorgeous effects popped up between the oil paint and the silkscreen background. The imagery came from the collection of collages I made some years before. Through using the figurative collages, I didn’t have to think about any subject while painting. Just paint the collage on the silkscreen and enjoy the process of creating a new image.
