At the Academy in Ghent we were supposed to draw. Luckily drawing could be anything. I used also a lot of gouache paint. It’s opaque and has great reflective qualities. It dries to a different value than it appears when wet. Surprise! I liked the directness of the quick coverage and total hiding power. Perfect for sketching. This series was heavily inspired by Richter, again. I did not see any of his work in reality at that time. Purely based on what I could see in catalogues in the library of the academy in Ghent. And don’t forget Rothko. Another painter I only discovered while hanging around at the academy.
