At the Academy in Ghent we were supposed to draw. Luckily drawing could be anything. I made an enormous amount of abstract paintings on paper with gouache. Sometimes the result was not what I wanted. I then simply cut out the parts that seemed fine. Of course I ended up with even more but smaller paintings. And sometimes the pieces I was cutting away turned out to be better than the ones that I was cutting out! This is a series of 13 examples. I remember that the red and blue one was one of the first to be created like this. I also remember my fellow students shaking their heads and rolling their eyes, when I presented these as 'paintings'.
